Florida Sea Turtle Nesting Season Update – July 31, 2025

From the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission:

The 2025 nesting season continues to bring exciting developments across Florida’s beaches!

🟧 Loggerheads remain the most common nester, with 93,455 nests, which is fewer than the same time in 2022–2024.

🟩 Green turtles are picking up speed, now at 36,150 nests, well ahead of this time in 2024 and steadily gaining ground toward the record-breaking season of 2023. August is a high nesting month, so we’re watching closely to see if they catch up.

🟪 Leatherbacks continue to impress! With 1,996 nests recorded, 2025 has officially set a new statewide record, surpassing the previous high from 2022. Although their nesting season is nearly complete, this remains one of the biggest stories of the year.

🟦 Kemp’s ridley nests, while rare, continue to be reported. Ten confirmed nests have been recorded as of the end of July.

Preliminary Nesting Totals – As of July 31, 2025:

• Loggerhead: 93,455 nests
• Green Turtle: 36,150 nests
• Leatherback: 1,996 nests – New Record!
• Kemp’s Ridley: 10 confirmed nests
• Hawksbill: 0 nests
